Susan VanRooy

susan_journaling.JPGSusan VanRooy is an artist and naturalist, living and working at the north end of Kootenay Lake. Her preferred mediums are watercolour and pen and ink; her studio is most often out of doors; and her subject matter is anything that interests her during adventures in nature. She has taught workshops in Nature Journaling for over 12 years and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Montana.

Her passion for keeping an ‘Illuminated Nature Journal’ and her search for a way of sharing her discoveries as well as her artwork, has led to the creation of The West Kootenay Journal…

The West Kootenay Journal is a start anytime day planner, illustrated and informed with watercolour and pen and ink sketches and paintings from Susan’s journals, and keen observations by area naturalists, gardeners, and historians. This unique creation is designed to encourage participation and investigation in nature as one moves through the seasons, month by month.

This planner will inform area residents, friends and family of residents, tourists, and new comers to the region, of local annual events, natural food and plant resources, relevant historical events, interesting natural history knowledge, and more.

Susan believes that the more we know about our home place, the more we uncover its beauty and treasure, the better equipped we’ll be to mindfully steward the land for generations to follow.
